In tree climbing, the hardware that links your system together is just as critical as the rope itself. Carabiners, screw links, and snaps are the small but mighty components that keep climbers attached to their lines, their harnesses, and their tools. Understanding the differences between these connectors—and knowing which ones are safe for life support versus which are meant for gear management—is a fundamental skill every climber needs to develop.

For anyone stepping into the canopy, the sheer variety of connection hardware can be confusing. Carabiners alone come in countless shapes, sizes, and locking mechanisms. Add screw links and snaps to the mix, and it's easy to see why new climbers often struggle to know what to buy. The good news is that the rules are straightforward once the distinctions are clear. The most important principle is simple: life-support connections demand the highest level of security, while gear-management connections can be simpler and more convenient.

Carabiners: The Everyday Connector

Carabiners are the most versatile and commonly used connectors in tree climbing. They serve a wide range of purposes, from the critical life-support tie-in point on the harness to simply hanging a handsaw or a gear bag. However, not all carabiners are created equal, and using the wrong type for the wrong job can have serious consequences.

For life support, the standard is a double-action auto-locking carabiner. This type of connector requires two distinct, deliberate movements to open the gate, which drastically reduces the risk of accidental opening from a passing twig, a rope rub, or an unintentional bump. This is the only type of carabiner that should be used for the main attachment point where the climber's weight is supported.

For gear management, non-locking carabiners—including the bent-gate style—are perfectly suitable. These are ideal for clipping tools, bags, and other accessories to the harness. Many climbers choose different colors to easily identify what is hanging where, which adds a layer of organization and efficiency to the setup. The critical rule, however, is absolute: non-locking carabiners must never be used for life support. Their gates can open without warning, and they simply do not provide the security required for a connection that holds a human being.

Screw Links: The Static Workhorses

Screw links, sometimes called maillons or quick links, are a different breed of connector. They are typically made of steel or aluminum and feature a threaded sleeve that screws shut over the gate. This design makes them exceptionally strong and resistant to multi-directional loading—a significant advantage over carabiners, which are designed to be loaded primarily along their long axis.

Screw links are best suited for static connections—points in the system that do not need to be opened and closed frequently. They excel at joining components where the load might come from multiple directions, such as attaching a friction saver, connecting a rigging sling, or creating a semi-permanent anchor point. A delta (triangular) screw link is a particularly popular shape in arboriculture, as its geometry allows for clean, organized connections with multiple pieces of hardware. Because they are not designed for frequent opening and closing, screw links are not the best choice for connections that need to be adjusted on the fly. But for a secure, bombproof connection that stays put, they are hard to beat.

Snaps: Quick and Secure Attachment

Snaps, also known as locking snaps or snap hooks, are a specialized type of connector often found on lanyards and positioning lines. They combine the convenience of a carabiner's gate with the security of a locking mechanism, and they are designed for quick, one-handed operation.

In arboriculture, snaps are commonly used on work positioning lanyards. Professional-grade lanyards often feature locking snaps sewn directly into the ends of the rope, providing a streamlined and secure connection point. Some lanyards incorporate a mechanical ascender between the two ends, while others use a combination of a mechanical ascender and a sewn-in locking snap. This configuration allows the climber to adjust the length of the lanyard quickly and securely while working. The key requirement for any snap used in a life-support application is that it must be a self-closing, locking type that meets the appropriate strength standards. Non-locking snaps are suitable only for gear attachment and should never be trusted to support a climber's weight.

Final Thoughts: The Right Connector for the Right Job

Carabiners, screw links, and snaps each have their place in a tree climber's kit. The art of safe climbing lies in understanding which connector is appropriate for which task. Double-action auto-locking carabiners form the secure foundation of the life-support system. Screw links provide unshakeable strength for static, multi-directional connections. Snaps offer quick, secure attachment for lanyards and positioning lines. By respecting these distinctions and always choosing the right tool for the job, climbers can build a system that is both efficient and safe.
