The anchor ring or attachment point slides on this bridge, allowing the harness to remain more securely in position, which is especially useful for branch walking. In most models, the bridge is replaceable. However, safety is paramount: if a bridge end comes untied, it can result in a fall. Most rope bridges are sewn at the ends for safety, which limits adjustability. Other designs use a piece of arborist rope with stopper knots tied on both ends; these knots must be carefully inspected before every climb, with two to three inches of tail visible on either side of each knot.

An adult-sized harness is dangerous for a child because it is too big, creating a risk of slipping out or ending up in an awkward, unsafe position. Children should never be placed in a rock climbing harness, as these are not designed for prolonged suspension. While padded leg-strap harnesses for children are no longer on the market, proper fit remains the critical factor for safety.
